Stress Less Reset More

Eyes on the Road, Mind in the Moment

As we are in the thick of Spring-cleaning mode, let’s pause for a timely reminder—distracted driving is more than just glancing at your phone. It’s about where your attention is, moment to moment, while behind the wheel.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Sure, we’ve all heard the familiar advice: Put down the phone. Stay focused. But distracted driving goes beyond that buzzword. It’s not just about screens or swiping—it’s the chaos in the car, the mental load we’re carrying, and the autopilot mode we fall into when life gets busy.

Picture this...

You’re driving your usual route. Your phone dings with a new message. The kids are asking for snacks. Your mind is already two hours ahead, planning dinner or stressing about a work deadline. Even though your hands are on the wheel, your focus is split—and your safety is compromised.

Distractions come in three forms:

  • Visual (eyes off the road)

  • Manual (hands off the wheel)

  • Cognitive (mind off driving)

And that last one? It’s the sneakiest. How many times have you arrived somewhere with no memory of the drive itself?

So, how do we refocus?

It starts with intention.

  1. Put your phone on Do Not Disturb before shifting into drive.

  2. Make a mental checklist: Am I rested? Fed? Focused?

  3. Set boundaries in the car—yes, even with chatty and/or younger passengers.

  4. Use a grounding technique before starting your drive—try taking three deep, controlled breaths or doing a quick 5-4-3-2-1 check-in (name 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, and 1 you taste) to bring your focus into the present moment.

As we head into a season filled with graduations, spring celebrations, and the countdown to summer, let’s challenge ourselves to slow down mentally. Your vehicle deserves your full attention. And more importantly, so do you and everyone you share the road with.

Stay safe, stay present, and enjoy the ride—one mindful mile at a time. 🚗✨
