Most driving mistakes don’t start with the car—they start with what’s surrounding you mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Let’s take a closer look at how the lifestyle medicine wellness pillars show up behind the wheel:
Physical Activity:
A sedentary body leads to slower reflexes and more tension while driving. Scheduling even a 10 min walk can help.
Nutrition:
Ever feel hangry at a stoplight or especially after a long day at work? Low blood sugar or skipped meals can make you irritable and impulsive on the road.
Social Connections:
After a tough conversation—or too much time feeling isolated—iit makes sense to want to get out of your surroundings creating that feeling. But it’s also easy to zone out or mind wander behind the wheel.
Substance Use / Risky Habits:
It’s not just alcohol or drugs. Even too much caffeine or misused prescriptions can affect your alertness and reaction time whether you are a pedestrian or a driver.
Stress Management:
If you’re mentally maxed out, every honk or delay feels personal. Learning to regulate your stress can help prevent road rage and impulsive choices.
Sleep:
Drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. When your brain hasn’t rested, everything around you feels foggy and you have less patience.
When we say “watch your surroundings,” we usually mean checking mirrors and blind spots for buses, bikes, pedestrians, and the like.

But what about your internal surroundings—your mindset, emotions, and body?
That’s the stuff you bring into the car every time you drive.
The better you care of your internal surroundings, the safer the outside surroundings are for everyone.
